The Executive Committee of the Costa Rican Football Federation has decided to retain Miguel “Piojo” Herrera as head coach of La Sele, according to Teletica. This decision comes despite the team’s poor start in the final round of World Cup 2026 qualifiers. Herrera returned from Mexico on Sunday and met with the federation’s nine board members on Monday to discuss his future.

The meeting highlighted differing opinions within the leadership. Some members wanted to dismiss him immediately, while the majority opted to give Herrera another chance, at least until the October FIFA window. Journalist Christian Sandoval indicated that most committee members wish to hear his corrective plan and expect quick solutions. Nevertheless, his continuation is contingent upon implementing changes in both player selection and tactical strategies.

One condition being discussed is the potential return of experienced players who were left out in recent selections. Veterans like Kendall Waston, Celso Borges, Johan Venegas, and Joel Campbell could be called back for important matches against Honduras and Nicaragua. By insisting on these additions, the federation aims to strengthen the team’s leadership and stability during this challenging period.

For Herrera, this decision provides some relief but not a guarantee of security. October will be crucial, and his job will depend on achieving positive results in two matches that could influence Costa Rica’s chances of qualifying.
