This season, Premier League clubs have achieved a record with six teams qualifying for the Champions League.
This is the first time any country has seen so many teams qualify in a single season. England’s additional co-efficient place, along with Tottenham’s performance in the Europa League, has contributed to this increased representation.
Interestingly, there is a possibility that more than a third of Premier League teams could participate in next season’s competition.
The race for a top-four finish is fierce, but certain situations could allow more Premier League clubs to secure spots in the 2026-27 Champions League.
Currently, four places in the Champions League are reserved for the top four teams in the league by the end of the season.
England is also likely to earn an additional spot through UEFA’s European Performance Spots, awarded to the two associations with the best overall club performance in UEFA competitions for the 2025/26 season. The Premier League is leading in the co-efficient table and is expected to qualify for this extra spot.
As a result, the fifth-placed team may also gain entry. Furthermore, the sixth and seventh-placed teams could qualify if English clubs perform well in major European tournaments this season.
For instance, if Liverpool wins the Champions League while securing a league qualifying position, and Aston Villa wins the Europa League, it could lead to a scenario where the seventh-placed team in the Premier League also secures a Champions League spot. As it stands, Brentford would get a place in the Champions League in this scenario.
Potential seven-team scenario for Premier League clubs in the 2026-27 Champions League
1. Arsenal
2. Man City
3. Man United
4. Chelsea
5. Liverpool – Win the Champions League
6. Aston Villa – Win the Europa League
7. Brentford
