Eddie Howe expressed disappointment after Newcastle lost 2-1 to Sunderland at St James’ Park.

This was the second defeat to Sunderland in the Tyne-Wear Derby this season, with the visitors coming from behind to secure the win.

Anthony Gordon scored first for Newcastle, marking his 17th goal of the season, but Sunderland responded in the second half. Chemsdine Talbi equalized for Sunderland, and Brian Brobbey scored the last-minute winner.

Newcastle also had a goal by Malick Thiaw disallowed, and a break in play due to alleged racist comments from fans made the day even harder for the team.

Howe acknowledged that the loss was challenging but did not attribute the second-half performance to their busy schedule.

“It was a painful afternoon for us. We started positively, but we didn’t build on that,” Howe said in a statement to Sky Sports.

“The first half underwhelmed, and we were not good enough in the second. The defeat feels harsh, but we didn’t perform well enough.”

“I’m hesitant to use the busy fixture list as an excuse. It would make sense to do so, but we need to improve. We have to take a close look at our mistakes and ensure we learn from them, as this is not the first time it has happened.”
