According to reports, Inter Miami are reportedly showing strong interest in one of Lionel Messi’s key Argentina teammates, a 2022 World Cup winner.
Since Lionel Messi’s arrival, Inter Miami have not spared any effort in building a competitive team, bringing in veteran stars such as Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suárez. Now, they are reportedly targeting another of Messi’s Argentine teammates, this time one still in his prime: Rodrigo De Paul.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano first reported that Inter Miami have opened talks with Atletico Madrid for De Paul. Meanwhile, Argentine journalist Gaston Edul has confirmed that the Herons have made an official offer, and the player is currently considering it. If an agreement is reached, the MLS side will then begin formal negotiations with Atletico.
De Paul, 31, is entering the final year of his contract with Atletico Madrid, having joined the Spanish club in 2021. The midfielder has been a key figure under Diego Simeone, making 187 appearances, scoring 14 goals, and registering 26 assists across all competitions.
He has also been an essential member of Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina squad, playing a vital role in their 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar as well as in their Copa America victories in 2021 and 2024. De Paul is widely known for his strong on- and off-field bond with Messi.

Is De Paul’s move linked to Messi’s future?
Talk of De Paul’s possible move to Miami has emerged alongside recent speculation about Messi’s future. Journalist Esteban Edul told ESPN that Messi is “considering” playing in another league to prepare for the 2026 World Cup. However, Fabrizio Romano has reported that both Messi and Inter Miami are keen to continue their partnership.
Messi’s current contract with the Herons runs until December 2025. While he has not officially confirmed his participation in the next World Cup, which is set to take place in the United States, Mexico and Canada, signs point to the Argentine legend aiming to maintain top form leading into the tournament.
Currently managed by Javier Mascherano, Inter Miami sit seventh in the MLS Eastern Conference. They are 10 points behind leaders FC Cincinnati but have four games in hand due to their Club World Cup participation.
