Inter Miami has signed midfielder David Ayala from the Portland Timbers, the clubs announced on Friday.
In return for the 23-year-old Argentina international, Portland will receive a guaranteed $2 million and up to an additional $150,000 based on performance. The Timbers will also keep a percentage of any future transfer fee.
Ayala will fill an U22 Initiative roster spot with the MLS Cup champions and is under contract until the end of the 2026 season.
Timbers general manager Ned Grabavoy expressed gratitude for Ayala’s contributions and wished him well in his future endeavors.
This transfer allows Ayala to be closer to his family as he considers the next step in his career. The funds received will help the Timbers improve their roster in the long run.
Ayala scored four goals and made two assists in 98 matches across all competitions since joining Portland before the 2022 season.
In Miami, Ayala will team up with fellow Argentine Rodrigo De Paul as they look to fill the gap left by retired midfielder Sergio Busquets.
Inter Miami’s 2026 MLS regular season will begin against Los Angeles FC on February 21.
