After leading Inter Miami to victory against DC United with two goals, Lionel Messi and his team are gearing up for a crucial match against New York City FC at Citi Field. With playoff hopes at stake, many are wondering if Messi will take the field.

Though he played the full match against DC United, Messi is likely to start again for Inter Miami today. Head coach Javier Mascherano aims to put out his strongest lineup to secure a postseason spot.

A win or a draw will guarantee Inter Miami’s place in the playoffs, with six games remaining in the regular season. The team is also in the running for the Supporters’ Shield, which they won last season.

Messi is also competing for the MLS Golden Boot. He has 22 goals, tying him with LAFC’s Denis Bouanga for the top spot on the scoring list. The World Cup champion is aiming to be the first player in MLS history to win back-to-back MVP awards.

Inter Miami projected starting lineup

For today’s match, Mascherano will be missing Allen Obando and David Ruiz due to injuries, while Telasco Segovia is out due to suspension after receiving a yellow card against DC United.

On a positive note, Luis Suarez returns to the squad after a three-match suspension related to a post-game incident during the 2025 Leagues Cup final against the Seattle Sounders.

Inter Miami’s expected lineup is: Oscar Ustari; Marcelo Weigandt or Ian Fray, Gonzalo Lujan, Maxi Falcon, Jordi Alba; Rodrigo De Paul, Sergio Busquets, Yannick Bright, Tadeo Allende; Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez.
