Colombia is set to play against Mexico in an international friendly match as they prepare for the 2026 World Cup, which Mexico will co-host. The Colombian team, already qualified for the tournament, aims to showcase its talent, led by the emerging star Luis Diaz.
Javier “El Vasco” Aguirre has not lost any of his last nine matches as coach of the Mexican national team. His unbeaten record will be tested against a strong Colombian team featuring players like James Rodriguez and Luis Diaz.
Under Argentine coach Nestor Lorenzo, the Colombian side will depend on the skills of attacking midfielder James Rodriguez, who plays for Leon in Liga MX, and the speed of Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz to challenge Mexico during this October 2025 FIFA international window.
Aguirre’s priority is to strengthen Mexico’s team as the year concludes, concentrating on establishing a stable group of players to aim for success at the upcoming World Cup.

Will Luis Diaz play for Colombia vs Mexico?
In a press conference before the match, coach Nestor Lorenzo confirmed that winger Luis Diaz will start, following his impressive performances with Bayern Munich. He also stated that James Rodriguez will be part of the starting lineup.
“James, our captain, will play, and Lucho Diaz will play,” Lorenzo said from the team’s hotel in Dallas. “I’ve observed Leon closely. James had a strong start to the season but faced challenges as several players left. However, he is ready and committed to the team’s goals.”
“The key is that he’s healthy and consistently playing. We’ll adapt him to maximize his contributions to the team. We have a talented group with a solid foundation, aiming for a successful World Cup,” Lorenzo emphasized, noting the experience of veterans like James Rodriguez, Luis Diaz, and goalkeeper David Ospina.
