Newcastle United has signed German forward Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart in a record deal, the club announced on Saturday.

While financial details were not disclosed, reports suggest the deal is worth 69 million pounds.

The 23-year-old’s transfer surpasses the previous record of 63 million pounds paid for Sweden striker Alexander Isak three years ago.

Woltemade, who came through Werder Bremen’s academy, made his Bundesliga debut at 17 in 2020. He moved to Stuttgart last year and scored 17 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.

Isak is unavailable as he seeks a move to Liverpool, so Woltemade will need to adapt quickly, although he won’t be registered in time to debut against Leeds United later on Saturday.

Manager Eddie Howe expressed excitement about Woltemade’s signing. “He matches our attacking needs perfectly. He has strong technical skills and has shown he can be a real threat in one of Europe’s top leagues, and he still has room to grow,” he said.

Woltemade, who stands 1.98 meters tall, has been capped twice by Germany and has been called up for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia and Northern Ireland.

“Leaving Germany is a big step for me, but everyone has welcomed me so warmly; it already feels like family,” Woltemade shared. “I have a good feeling after talking to the head coach, and I believe this is the right place for me to excel. From our first contact, I felt the club genuinely wanted me and had great plans for my future.”
