The Italian national team’s rebuilding effort is picking up speed after a disappointing World Cup qualifying round. With Gabriele Gravina’s resignation confirmed, attention is now on finding an interim head coach to lead the Azzurri until a permanent replacement is found.
Sportmediaset reports that Silvio Baldini, who currently manages Italy’s U-21 team, is a leading candidate for the interim role. He may step in to oversee the senior team during this period of transition.
The situation is made more urgent by an upcoming schedule: Italy has two friendly matches before the FIGC presidential elections on June 22 in Rome. The federation needs to appoint a manager quickly to handle these upcoming games.
This isn’t the first time Italy has taken this approach. In 2018, after failing to qualify for the World Cup, they appointed Luigi Di Biagio, a youth national team coach, as the interim manager before selecting a permanent one.
