The Italian national team will be without Serie A top scorer Mateo Retegui when they face Germany in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals due to injury.
“Forward Mateo Retegui, who was examined this morning due to an injury to his right thigh, will not be able to play in the two matches against Germany and has returned to the club for further examinations,” the Italian Football Federation said as quoted by Reuters on Wednesday.
The Atalanta player is the top scorer in Serie A this season with 22 goals per week 29. With the Italian national team, Retegui has recorded six goals from 18 appearances since making his debut in 2023.
It is still unknown whether the Italian national team coach, Luciano Spalletti will call another striker to replace Retegui.
Even so, Spalletti can still rely on Fiorentina striker Moise Kean to spearhead his team against Germany.
Kean himself is the top scorer in Serie A this season under Retegui with 15 goals.
The Italian national team is scheduled to host Germany at the San Siro Stadium in the first leg on Friday (21/3) at 01.15 AM IST. The second leg will take place at Signal Iduna Park on Monday (24/3).
