Javier Mascherano reveals details about Lionel Messi’s much-anticipated return with Inter Miami

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano spoke about Lionel Messi’s physical condition and provided key details about his return after missing Argentina’s national team action.

A minor muscular injury sustained in Inter Miami’s last match before the international break on Sunday, October 16, against Atlanta United kept Lionel Messi from joining Argentina’s squad for World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil. Despite his absence, Lionel Scaloni’s team secured two crucial victories, officially clinching their spot in the 2026 World Cup.

Now, as Inter Miami prepares to resume MLS competition, Mascherano discussed Messi’s likelihood of playing in the upcoming match against the Philadelphia Union. Messi participated in Friday’s team training session, raising hopes for his return to action.

“Leo is doing well. If everything goes smoothly, he will surely be in the squad, Mascherano told reporters before Friday’s practice. “Sometimes we have to hold him back to ensure he doesn’t take risks, but he knows his body very well,” the coach explained.

The Argentine coach also revealed the captain’s steady progress during training sessions. “He’s been training progressively and has now joined several sessions with the team. Today, God willing, he’ll complete the full training session,” Mascherano added.

When will Inter Miami face the Philadelphia Union?

The highly anticipated clash between Inter Miami and the Philadelphia Union, which could see Lionel Messi’s return, is scheduled for Saturday at 7:30 PM (ET) at Chase Stadium.

Inter Miami aims for the top spot

Philadelphia Union currently holds a two-point lead over Inter Miami atop the Eastern Conference standings, though they’ve played one more match. A victory on Saturday would allow Mascherano’s side to leapfrog Philadelphia and claim first place.

Despite Miami’s strong start to the season—amassing 10 points in four matches—Mascherano emphasized the importance of maintaining focus. “We are always looking to improve. We can’t just rely on the momentum from the start of the season,” he said. “Of course, it’s great for building confidence and a good atmosphere in the squad, but the season is just getting started”.
