The coach has returned to Portugal.
Benfica lost their first UEFA Champions League match against Qarabağ and decided to let go of their head coach. They have now chosen a well-known figure to take over.
Details: Insider Fabrizio Romano has reported that José Mourinho has been named the new manager of Benfica, confirmed with his signature phrase “here we go.” His contract will last until the summer of 2027. Official confirmation is expected within the next 24 hours.
Mourinho previously managed Benfica at the start of his coaching career during the 2000/2001 season. His time with the club was short—just 10 matches over four months—during which the team achieved five wins, three draws, and two losses.
Reminder: Mourinho’s last position was with Turkish club Fenerbahçe, where he did not win the domestic league title or advance to the UEFA Champions League.
