Julian Alvarez is at the center of an ongoing summer transfer saga. He has yet to extend his contract with Atlético Madrid, even though the club has been trying to get him to sign for weeks. There’s no rush for the Argentinian player, who is contracted until 2030 after joining from Manchester City for €75 million about 15 months ago. His impressive performances have caught the attention of the Colchoneros.
Initially, Alvarez took some time to find his stride, but he has now scored 29 goals and provided 8 assists in 57 matches across all competitions. In Madrid, he has the opportunity to be a starter, something Pep Guardiola couldn’t promise due to Erling Haaland’s presence. This season, the 2022 World Cup champion has continued his strong form, netting 9 goals and contributing 4 assists in 14 matches. Atlético aims to secure their position moving forward.
Atlético Madrid is aware that both FC Barcelona and PSG are showing interest in the 25-year-old player. Alvarez’s hesitation to extend his contract fuels these rumors, particularly as he worries about being sidelined in both La Liga and the Champions League. He aspires for more, but can Atlético truly compete with the giants of Spain and Europe for titles? Recently, his agent Fernando Hidalgo stated, “Nothing that has been written is true; these are just fanciful speculations.”
Alvarez also addressed the rumors in an interview with France Football, saying, “Honestly, I don’t know. I see what’s being said on social media… There’s a lot of talk in Spain about me and Barcelona. When I signed with Atlético last year, there was a lot of discussion about Paris. It’s true there were talks between PSG’s directors and my agent; they showed interest, but it didn’t happen. Right now, I’m focused on Atlético. We’ll assess things at the end of the season.” The door remains open.
