The Kansas City Current has appointed Chris Armas as their new head coach, according to an announcement made on Wednesday.
Armas, a former midfielder for the United States men’s national team and MLS champion, was last the head coach of the Colorado Rapids in MLS. During his two years there, the Rapids reached the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs in 2024 and narrowly missed qualifying in 2025.
Before that, he led teams like the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC in MLS. His coaching career began with the DII Adelphi University Panthers women’s team at his alma mater from 2011 to 2014.
“The talented players, facilities, and passionate community make this club a top-tier environment,” said Armas. “What stands out most is the culture and the people involved. I’m motivated by the shared vision from the ownership and staff, and I will work hard to help the KC Current become the best women’s football club worldwide.”
This appointment follows recent front-office changes, including the transition of former head coach Vlatko Andonovski to the role of global sporting director, a position he held while managing the team for two seasons.
“We are thrilled to have Chris join us in Kansas City and look forward to collaborating closely as we aim to elevate the club,” said Andonovski. “Chris brings extensive experience that will greatly benefit our organization. His dedication to the game and commitment to his players are clear, along with his goal-oriented mindset.”
The Current achieved remarkable success this year, winning the National Women’s Soccer League Shield with league records of 65 points and 21 victories. However, they faced an upset in the first round of the playoffs against eventual champions Gotham FC.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Chris to the Kansas City Current family,” said club co-owners Angie and Chris Long. “His wealth of experience as both a coach and player aligns with our long-term vision for the Kansas City Current to become the leading women’s football club globally.”
