Roy Keane has criticized Manchester United‘s management, stating that the club is ‘going around in circles’ after the firing of Ruben Amorim.
Amorim was let go on Monday following a challenging 14 months with the Red Devils. Darren Fletcher takes over as interim manager, while talks are underway about possibly reappointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Michael Carrick as caretaker. A decision regarding a permanent manager is expected in the summer.
With interim appointments included, United has now had 10 different managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
Keane expressed concern over the club’s leadership, arguing that the presence of Ferguson and former chief executive David Gill is preventing progress. In an interview with Sky Sports, he claimed the duo is ‘hanging around like a bad smell.’
“What happens in these job interviews? I’m curious. Why do they keep hiring certain people? What goes on in these interviews that leads to deciding someone isn’t right just 12 or 14 months later?”
“Shouldn’t you be able to figure that out when you’re speaking with them? You look someone in the eye and…”
“You see who’s making the decisions at Manchester United… You still have [Alex] Ferguson and David Gill around like a bad smell.”
“Who makes the decisions? [Sir Jim] Ratcliffe, [Jason] Wilcox? Who’s involved in the interview process? You need to assess a manager and think, ‘he’s the right one for us.’”
“Forget the CV for a moment. Sure, you need credentials and experience, but you have to gauge if someone can lead the team.”
“When someone walks into the dressing room, the top players will ask, ‘what can you offer us?’ If you fail to provide answers, the players will take advantage.”
“In the match against Burnley, the quality of the game was terrible. Everyone afterward said it wasn’t bad, but that’s nonsense! We’re just going in circles. Any former United player seems to have a chance.”
