Calicut FC Wins in a Thrilling Finish
Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram Kombans FC suffered an unexpected loss in the Sports.com Super League Kerala, organized by Amul. In the tenth-round match at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium, table-toppers Calicut FC defeated the Kombans 2-1. Both of Calicut’s goals were scored during injury time. Paulo Victor scored for the Kombans, while Rinquan and Ajsal scored for Calicut. With 12 points from 10 games, the Kombans’ chances of reaching the semi-finals are now slim. They can only advance if Malappuram FC loses to Forza Kochi in Thursday’s match. This result has secured a semi-final spot for the Kannur Warriors.
In the 6th minute, a shot from Muhammed Aszhar from the left wing did not trouble the Calicut goal. The Kombans took the lead in the 16th minute when Paulo Victor successfully converted a pass from Badish to make the score 1-0.
In the 24th minute, Kombans’ goalkeeper Satyajit saved a close-range shot from Bruno Cunha. Calicut’s captain, Ajay Alex, left the field due to an injury and was replaced by Shahabas Ahmed. Following this, Rinan Rocha of Kombans and Asif of Calicut received yellow cards. Goalkeeper Satyajit’s excellent saves in the first half were crucial in preventing Calicut from scoring.
At the beginning of the second half, Calicut brought in the league’s top scorer, Muhammed Ajsal, as a substitute. Calicut’s persistent attacks finally paid off in injury time. Rinquan scored the equalizer for Calicut through a penalty. Shortly after, Ajsal scored from a free-kick, securing a memorable win for Calicut FC. In the first leg of the tournament in Kozhikode, Calicut had also defeated the Kombans by a single goal.
On Thursday, December 4, the final match of the league stage will see Malappuram FC take on Forza Kochi FC. The match will kick off at 7:30 PM at the Manjeri Payyanad Stadium.
