Real Madrid‘s manager, Xabi Alonso, reaffirmed his choice to keep Brazilian winger Vinicius Jr out of the starting line-up, emphasizing the need for every player to compete for their position, despite Vinicius being impactful as a substitute.
His strategy worked last Sunday when Vinicius came off the bench to help Real Madrid secure a 3-0 victory against Oviedo, assisting Mbappe’s second goal and scoring himself.
Real Madrid is currently tied for the top spot in La Liga, winning both of their first matches, and is preparing for a game against Mallorca, who are struggling in 16th place with just one point from two games.
When questioned about the significance of not starting a player of Vinicius’s stature, Alonso remained confident.

“In the dressing room, it’s essential that everyone is ready to help, whether they are on the field or not,” he said during a press conference. “Believing in this is crucial, and everyone does.”
Alonso praised Vinicius for his performance, stating, “I’m pleased with how Vini played. Against Oviedo, he demonstrated his ability to make a significant impact from the bench. We’re just starting out, and he will be vital.”
He also expressed support for Rodrygo, who took Vinicius’s place on the left wing for his first start since their Club World Cup match against Al Hilal in June.
“He has excelled in various positions. He has played as a striker and even a playmaker. But I think the left wing suits him well,” Alonso noted.
However, he did not reveal if Rodrygo would start over Vinicius this weekend.
“It wouldn’t be wise for me to disclose my plans on starting him or having him on the left wing again,” he said with a smile. “We’ll find out tomorrow.”
