Barcelona and its fans received exciting news this week. The team, including Pedri and Lamine Yamal, will return to the Camp Nou on Saturday for a La Liga match against Athletic. This marks their long-awaited return to their home stadium after spending two and a half years playing at Montjuic. The extended period away has significantly affected the club’s finances, as matchday revenue at Camp Nou far exceeds that of Montjuic.
The return to the newly renovated stadium is expected to provide a financial boost. However, recent comments from Javier Gomez, the corporate general director of La Liga, may dampen the mood. He noted that the club’s expenses still significantly exceed its income.
At the same time, Gomez confirmed that Barcelona will not receive leniency regarding financial regulations. Expenses from other teams within the club, such as the women’s soccer and basketball teams, are also considered in calculating the financial fair play salary margin. This means that investments in the women’s team, for example, will limit the budget available to strengthen the men’s first team. Barcelona has recently invested heavily in its women’s team.
Despite returning to the rule of 1:1—where every euro earned can be reinvested in player acquisitions—La Liga officials will continue to monitor Barcelona’s finances closely. This scenario could lead to challenges in registering new players in the future. Gomez concluded that while the return to Camp Nou may help, the club still faces ongoing issues with Spanish league authorities.
