Chelsea striker Liam Delap could be sidelined for several weeks due to a hamstring injury sustained during Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Fulham, according to manager Enzo Maresca.
Delap went down holding his thigh just 13 minutes into the match and went directly to the tunnel after receiving medical attention.
With this latest injury, three Chelsea players have faced setbacks this month. Attacker Cole Palmer is also out with a groin injury, while center-back Levi Colwill is expected to miss most of the season due to a cruciate ligament tear.
“The injury doesn’t look good. He was at full speed, and hamstring injuries take weeks to heal,” Maresca stated at a press conference.
Maresca noted that Chelsea will be looking to sign another defender following Colwill’s injury and did not rule out acquiring another striker as well.
“Having two strikers is sufficient. But when one is out for weeks, we may need more,” he added.
The manager mentioned he could not determine if this summer’s Club World Cup, which Chelsea won, contributed to the injuries.
However, he expressed satisfaction in securing two consecutive league wins after starting the season with a goalless draw against Crystal Palace.
“I’m pleased. We have seven points, which is important. I wasn’t happy after the first half because we didn’t play as planned. In the second half, we were much better with the ball and controlled it effectively,” he concluded.
