Inter Miami player Lionel Messi recently shared his thoughts on Major League Soccer’s competitive framework, suggesting that he would change one of the league’s key rules to boost its development.

On October 23rd, Inter Miami announced that Messi had agreed to a contract extension, ensuring he will remain with the team for two more years. In an interview with NBC, Messi remarked that while MLS has great potential for growth, significant changes are necessary.

For soccer to advance in the United States, I believe it is possible, but we need to implement major changes for teams to keep evolving. There is a very solid foundation: the clubs are ready and genuinely want to grow, and I think it’s the right moment for that,” Messi stated.

When asked about specific changes, Messi highlighted the need to remove financial constraints on player signings. He was referring to the league’s strict salary cap and spending rules that aim to maintain balance among teams.

For this progress to start, each team must have the ability to bring in and sign the players it wants without limits or laws that restrict it. Currently, all teams in the United States have the potential to do this, and I believe that if they are allowed this freedom, many top players will come and positively impact the growth of soccer in the country,” he added.

Messi on Inter Miami’s growth

Messi joined the US club in 2023 after playing for Paris Saint-Germain. He noted that Inter Miami has experienced significant growth since his arrival, a time when the team won its first two trophies: the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters’ Shield.

The Inter Miami brand has become very strong not just in the United States but internationally as well. The club has made major changes and has improved in all areas: sporting, institutional, and organizational. I think there is still more potential for growth and enhancement,” Messi concluded.
