Lionel Messi extends impressive advantage over Cristiano Ronaldo with two assists in Inter Miami’s win vs Atlas

Lionel Messi shined with two assists in Inter Miami’s victory over Atlas, further extending his impressive career lead over Cristiano Ronaldo.

Even though Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have stepped away from top-level competition in Europe, both stars continue to shine in their respective leagues, proving why they’re regarded among the greatest players in soccer history. Recently, the Argentine delivered two assists in Inter Miami’s win over Atlas, further extending his advantage over the Portuguese forward.

Inter Miami defeated Atlas 2–1 at Chase Stadium in Matchday 1 of the 2025 Leagues Cup group stage, with goals from Telasco Segovia and Marcelo Weigandt, both set up by Messi. With those two assists, the Miami captain reached 388 career assists across 1,115 matches, excluding club friendlies.

The performance widened Messi’s already significant lead over Cristiano Ronaldo in career assists. The 38-year-old now has 131 more assists than Ronaldo, who sits at 257 across 1,281 matches, also excluding friendlies.

While Messi’s lead in assists may not come as a surprise—given the contrasting play styles and positions they’ve occupied throughout their careers—it highlights their unique paths.

Ronaldo began his career as a winger before evolving into a central striker, while Messi has spent most of his career playing on the right wing. But as time went on, his role shifted, eventually seeing him play all across the attacking front

Messi’s incredible 2025 form continues

Messi’s 2025 campaign with Inter Miami has been nothing short of spectacular. The Herons currently sit fifth in MLS, eight points behind the Philadelphia Union but with three games in hand. Much of Miami’s success under head coach Javier Mascherano has been fueled by Messi’s stellar performances.

Earlier this season, Messi became the first player in MLS history to score two goals in five consecutive league matches, scoring against Montreal CF (in two different matches), New England Revolution and Columbus Crew.

With two more group-stage games ahead — against Necaxa on Sunday, August 2, and Pumas UNAM on Wednesday, August 6 — Miami will look to secure advancement in the Leagues Cup as Messi continues to set new milestones.
