In an interview with Sports360, Jordi Mestre, former director and vice-president of sports at FC Barcelona during Josep Maria Bartomeu’s tenure, spoke out about Lionel Messi. He highlighted what Messi brought to the Catalan club, stating, “What he has given us is impressive. Not only in sports but also economically: tours with Leo Messi were different from those without him. Sure, he earned a substantial salary, but he deserved it and also generated significant revenue for the club.”
He further added, “There were players who came to Barça because they wanted to play with Messi, global stars who wanted to join because Leo was here. I know, from third parties, that Leo Messi and his family are very, very angry with Laporta. Very angry. What he said about the barbecue… (the Barcelona president had hosted a barbecue despite COVID-19 restrictions) We have already seen that. Now, I don’t know what they are planning, but I think anything we do for Messi would feel small. I would do something historic for him.”
