Lionel Messi has long been involved in charitable work, helping various causes and those in need. He demonstrates a strong sense of responsibility off the field, even if he isn’t always very interactive with fans.

Messi has announced his upcoming trip to India, expressing that it is an honor to return to a place where he last played 14 years ago. His journey will cover four cities, starting with Kolkata on December 12. After Kolkata, he will visit Ahmedabad, then Mumbai, and finally Delhi, where he plans to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This announcement was made official through Messi’s Instagram. He stated, “It is a great honor for me to make this trip. India is a very special country and I have fond memories of my time there 14 years ago; the fans were fantastic. India is a soccer-loving nation, and I look forward to meeting a new generation of supporters and sharing my passion for this beautiful sport.”

The trip details were initially shared by organizer Satadru Dutta on August 15, but this was the first time Messi himself confirmed the visit.

What will Messi do in India?

Upon his arrival in Kolkata on December 12, Messi will unveil his statue the next day, followed by a “GOAT Concert” and the “GOAT Cup.” The GOAT Cup will be a special seven-a-side match featuring Messi alongside Sourav Ganguly, Leander Paes, John Abraham, and Bhaichung Bhutia.

As reported by Olé, ticket prices will likely start at 3,500 rupees, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is expected to honor Messi during the event.

Later that evening, Messi will fly to Ahmedabad for a private event with sponsors. He will then continue on to Mumbai on December 14, before moving to Delhi on December 15 for another GOAT Concert at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Dutta also mentioned that Messi is expected to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “We will request an appointment with the Prime Minister,” Dutta said.

This won’t be Messi’s first trip to India. He previously visited in 2011 for a friendly match against Venezuela at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium, marking his first appearance as Argentina’s captain.
