Lionel Messi possibly played his last World Cup qualifier at home, in which he scored twice, leading to a 3-0 victory for Argentina against Venezuela. This brought his total goals for the national team to 114, sparking renewed discussions about Cristiano Ronaldo’s international scoring record, which stands at 138 goals for Portugal.

Messi’s latest goals came during Thursday’s South American qualifier, while Ronaldo holds the top spot in men’s international soccer scoring. Following these two, Iran’s Ali Daei ranks third with 108 goals.

In Buenos Aires, the atmosphere was emotional as Messi confirmed this was his final qualifier in Argentina. Apart from being the country’s top scorer, he also leads in assists with 59.

Messi has made 72 appearances in qualifiers, tying with Ecuador’s Ivan Hurtado for the most appearances record. He also leads with 36 goals, ahead of Uruguay’s Luis Suarez, who has 29.

Argentina’s coach, Lionel Scaloni, confirmed that resting Messi for the upcoming match against Ecuador was his decision. He stated, “He has made an enormous effort, a big sacrifice. He deserves to rest and be with his family.” Scaloni also mentioned that Messi will decide his future, including the possibility of playing in the 2026 World Cup.
