Lionel Messi set to lose Argentine teammate but Inter Miami reportedly ready to sign Liga MX player for $7M

Lionel Messi may be set to lose an Argentine teammate at Inter Miami, but reports indicate the MLS club is on the verge of landing a Liga MX player for $7 million.

After advancing to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals, Inter Miami are looking to strengthen the roster led by Javier Mascherano, with Lionel Messi and company chasing major goals this season. However, the MLS side could also be on the verge of losing an Argentine midfielder during the current transfer window.

According to Mexican outlet Súper Deportivo, the Herons are deep in negotiations to sign Argentine defender Gonzalo Piovi from Liga MX side Cruz Azul. The report states that Inter Miami and Piovi have already agreed to a three-year contract, but the player’s release from Cruz Azul remains unresolved.

Following news of Miami’s interest, TUDN reported that Cruz Azul executives are demanding close to $7 million for the 30-year-old center back. The outlet also noted that if Inter Miami is unwilling to pay that fee, “the Mexican side will not entertain any further offers” for Piovi.

The Argentine is considered a key part of Cruz Azul’s back line. Since joining the club in January 2024, Piovi has appeared in 74 matches, contributing six assists but has yet to score his first goal.

Federico Redondo set for Europe move

While talks for Piovi continue, Inter Miami are also preparing for a significant departure. Federico Redondo is headed to Spain to join LaLiga side Elche in a permanent transfer.

In a swift negotiation, the clubs agreed to a $3 million deal for 50% of the 22-year-old midfielder’s rights. Redondo has already traveled to Spain with his agent for a medical and is expected to sign a contract through 2030. With a Spanish passport, he will not take up a non-EU roster spot — a key factor in Elche’s pursuit.

Redondo joined Miami in early 2024 from Argentina for roughly €8 million. In his 18 months with the club, he won the Supporters’ Shield and appeared in 60 matches, scoring twice and adding four assists.
