Inter Miami has formed a skilled team centered around Lionel Messi, enjoying notable success. However, a significant change may come, as one of Messi’s vital teammates is expected to retire after the 2025 MLS season.

According to COPE journalist Nacho Garcia, Sergio Busquets plans to retire when his contract with Inter Miami concludes in 2025. The World Cup champion has hinted at ending his career soon, stating last summer that he is “much closer to ending my career than to continuing it.” An official announcement is likely coming soon.

The 37-year-old midfielder, who has won 32 titles with Barcelona and has 143 caps for Spain, will retire two years after joining Messi in Miami.

Busquets’ exit signifies the departure of one of football’s most respected midfielders. For Inter Miami, it means losing a crucial Designated Player, who, alongside Messi and Jordi Alba, has formed a crucial part of their project inspired by Barcelona.

Busquets’ legacy

Busquets’ career began to flourish in 2008 when Pep Guardiola elevated him to Barcelona’s first team. He became a crucial part of the midfield, redefining the pivot role with his tactical understanding, precise positioning, and outstanding passing. His subtle yet essential style proved vital to Barcelona’s well-known “tiki-taka” play.

A pivotal player during Barcelona’s successful years, he won numerous domestic and international awards, including two historic trebles in 2009 and 2015, along with several Champions League titles. His keen understanding of the game was equally important for Spain, contributing to the national team’s victories in the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012.

Throughout the years, Busquets remained a central figure for Barcelona, even as other stars moved on. His quiet leadership and consistent excellence led to him becoming team captain, linking the club’s glorious past with its current state. His ability to manage the tempo and dismantle opposition defenses was unparalleled.

In 2023, Sergio Busquets concluded his long career with Barcelona to embark on a new journey in MLS, joining former teammates Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba at Inter Miami.
