Argentina’s Under-20 national team was unable to finish its strong performance at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile, losing 2-0 to Morocco in the final at Estadio Nacional in Santiago. Both goals were scored by Yassir Zabiri, who secured the win for Morocco with two first-half goals. Lionel Scaloni extended his support to the young players after the match.

Despite the defeat, the team received recognition from the senior national squad. Just hours after the game, Lionel Scaloni shared a message on his official Instagram account, commending the players for their efforts throughout the tournament.

In his post, the head coach praised the dedication of the players and highlighted the contributions of Diego Placente and his coaching team, who had led Argentina to the semifinals of the 2023 U-17 World Cup earlier.

We have the boys, the passion, the feeling, the motivation, the discipline, and the fight… Argentina and the senior national team staff are very proud of you. Thanks to the entire team, Bernardo Romeo, Diego Placente and his staff, and especially the players for your efforts in this World Cup. Vamos Argentina! Scaloni wrote.

Lionel Messi shows support for the Under-20 team

Senior national team captain, Lionel Messi, also sent his congratulations to the young players. On his official Instagram, Messi shared a picture of the AFA emblem along with encouraging words for the team that represented Argentina with pride, despite not winning the trophy.

Keep your heads up, guys! You played an incredible tournament, and while we all hoped to see you lift the trophy, we appreciate everything you gave us and feel proud of how you defended the celeste y blanca,” Messi wrote.

Still the greatest despite the loss

Even with this defeat, Argentina remains the most successful team in the U-20 category. The Albiceleste boasts an impressive record, having won six titles in eight finals they have played.

Their first championship was in Japan in 1979, led by Diego Maradona. José Pekerman’s era added two more titles in Qatar 1995 and Malaysia 1997. Javier Saviola and Lionel Messi helped lead teams to victories in Argentina 2001 and the Netherlands 2005, with their most recent title coming in Canada 2007 under Sergio Aguero.
