Since the beginning of the season, Manchester United has faced multiple fitness issues, leaving several important players unavailable due to long-term injuries.

The team’s defense has been frequently changed, leading former manager Ruben Amorim to adjust his strategies for Premier League games.

The effect has been noticeable, as United has conceded important goals during times when regular starters were missing.

Off the field, the club has invested significantly in rehabilitation facilities and sports science teams to ensure players return stronger after injuries.

Lisandro Martinez has become a notable example of this struggle, showing both resilience and vulnerability.

The Manchester United defender faced a significant challenge, almost considering retirement due to an injury that kept him sidelined for nine months.

He injured his anterior cruciate ligament during a 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in February and made his return in November, helping his team secure a 2-1 victory against the same opponent at Selhurst Park.

This was not his first injury; his nearly four-year journey at Manchester United has included knee, foot, calf, and back problems.

A foot injury kept him out for 106 days during the 2023-24 season.

These lengthy absences meant he missed the 2023 FA Cup final and last season’s Europa League final.

Out of a possible 135 Premier League matches since joining the club, he has only played 67.

Martinez shared that “after the first two or three weeks” of his latest injury, he thought about quitting football at 26.

However, with support from family and therapy, he found the strength to fight back.

Martinez mentioned in a YouTube interview: “You feel like you’re not a football player anymore. You feel pain and think you’ll never play again. It’s a mental and physical imbalance, which I honestly don’t know how I managed.”

“I relied on those around me, my family, my friends. Initially, I didn’t want to play football anymore, but with support, I realized the importance of not taking the easy way out. True character shows in difficult times.”

“I reconnected with myself, my values, and I committed fully every day. It was a constant fight, and I focused on my recovery in the gym.”

“I also worked with my psychologist, aiming to improve in every aspect. With each month, I noticed the improvements, and now on the pitch, I feel great, thanks to those challenging days and my determination.”
