Liverpool manager Arne Slot kept quiet on Friday about the future of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak as speculation rises with the Premier League transfer window closing on September 1.
During Slot’s press conference ahead of the home game against Arsenal on Sunday, transfer news dominated the discussion, with suggestions that Newcastle might have signed Stuttgart forward Nick Woltemade.
“If it’s true, Newcastle has signed a new number nine,” Slot remarked. “That’s good for Eddie (Howe), especially since Anthony Gordon is suspended and Isak hasn’t trained much with the team.”
“We always look to bring in players who can help us, but there’s no need to complain after just two games. If we can strengthen the squad for the right price, we will. But with only three or four days left, we’ll see what happens.”
Reports indicate Liverpool made a £110 million ($148.34 million) bid for Isak earlier this month.
As both Liverpool and Arsenal have won their first two matches, Slot emphasized the importance of not losing points early, particularly against a motivated Arsenal team that has finished as league runners-up for the past three seasons.
“You can lose ground early, but not too much,” Slot said. “I’d be surprised if a team hits over 100 points this season due to the league’s competitiveness.”
“It’s best not to drop any points, but it’s possible to remain competitive even if you do.”
Slot confirmed that Conor Bradley and Alexis Mac Allister returned to training this week, and noted there were no injuries from their 3-2 league victory over Newcastle on Monday.
The Dutch coach also praised new signing Hugo Ekitike, who has scored three goals in three matches since joining from Eintracht Frankfurt last month.
“He has significantly impacted our attack, not just by scoring but also by initiating plays,” Slot said. “The key area for improvement is his match fitness, and I expect him to contribute more off the ball as he adapts to the new league and style of play.”
