Liverpool‘s transfer plans for 2026 are facing challenges as European rivals target key players.

Manchester City is not the only club disrupting Liverpool’s transfer strategy. With Antoine Semenyo nearing a move to the Etihad and Marc Guehi also linked to City due to defensive issues, Liverpool seems to be losing ground on several key targets.

Missing out on established Premier League players would be a setback, but recent updates indicate that two more players linked to Liverpool are drawing interest from teams across Europe.

Liverpool has been linked with RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, with reports suggesting Leipzig will ask for close to €100 million (around £88 million) for the player.

FC Köln’s Saïd El Mala has also surfaced as a potential target for Liverpool. Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has praised El Mala as a ‘quality’ player, and now Bayern has officially included both Diomande and El Mala on their summer shortlist.

Journalist Florian Plettenberg reports that Bayern is focusing on signing a top left winger, making El Mala one of their primary options. Diomande, who is under contract until 2030 and lacks a release clause, is also on their radar, though any transfer would depend significantly on the cost, likely following the World Cup.

Liverpool’s concerning inactivity in the market

Currently, there’s little sign that Liverpool is close to making any major signings this January. The focus is shifting towards their top targets likely joining other clubs.

While losing players to Bayern is troublesome, letting Manchester City strengthen at Liverpool’s expense would be particularly damaging. Despite indications that City’s dominance may be declining, they seem prepared to invest heavily again. Meanwhile, Liverpool’s struggles since their 2024/25 title win continue, with no clear changes in management or transfer activity to improve the situation.
