Sean Longstaff praised teammate Lucas Perri for his contribution to Leeds’ FA Cup victory over Birmingham City.
Leeds advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup after winning a penalty shootout at St Andrews, following a 1-1 draw. Birmingham equalized late in the match with a goal from Patrick Roberts, after Lukas Nmecha had given Leeds the lead.
In the shootout, Longstaff scored the winning penalty, benefiting from Perri’s save against Tommy Doyle and Roberts missing his shot over the bar.
Longstaff acknowledged Perri’s efforts, noting that he has recently lost his starting position to Karl Darlow.
When asked about his nerves before taking the decisive penalty, Longstaff shared: “It helps knowing that if you miss, there are more penalties to come. But Lucas [Perri] was crucial today, not just in the shootout but throughout the game, especially in the first half.”
“We fought hard for the result. Winning in the FA Cup is never easy, but we’re glad to move forward.”
“When you’re drawn against a lower division team away, many expect an easy victory, but that’s not always the case. I thought they played excellently today.”
“In the end, it’s all about key moments and we were stronger in those today. I’m really pleased for Lucas; he has faced challenges lately and truly earned this moment.”
