Luis Enrique Transforms Nuno Mendes into a Key Player

In an interview with Ouest-France on Monday, 23-year-old Nuno Mendes discussed his remarkable development. “At first, I wasn’t very strong defensively. I knew how to attack with speed. Luis Enrique noticed that and helped me improve my defense, so now I’m good on both ends. I try to balance attacks and take breaks when needed. The coach has done a great job, not just for me. (Versatility) is something Luis Enrique taught us, and we’ll carry that with us for life, whether he leaves or we do. It’s up to me to know how I can improve, but he has contributed a lot. Earlier, I struggled in one-on-one defensive situations because I only focused on attacking. But he told me, ‘You need to defend better, and then I’ll give you the freedom to attack.’”

Currently in excellent form, the Portuguese player is regarded as one of the best in his position, similar to his teammate Achraf Hakimi on the right. “It’s always nice to hear. Achraf and I are in a good phase. It’s a collective effort; when we’re doing well, the team benefits too. However, we know that football can change quickly, so we try to stay focused in every match. I see myself as a good fullback, but I don’t like to say I’m the best. That needs to be proven on the pitch, and I strive to do that. There’s still much for me to learn, but at the moment, I can’t point out any major shortcomings. I always try to perform at my best to help the team. I don’t dwell on my weaknesses.” He notably needs to work on his right foot. “Yes, the coach wants us to practice with our weaker foot (laughs), every day. I remember a Coupe de France match where I found myself in a shooting position with my right foot at the last minute, and I shot too softly.” So, Nuno Mendes still has areas to refine.
