During his time at Manchester United, Luke Shaw has played under eight different managers, highlighting both the club’s instability and his own resilience. This number would be a club record if not for his former teammate David de Gea.
De Gea played under nine managers, the most of any player in the club’s history: Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Ryan Giggs, Louis van Gaal, José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, Michael Carrick, Ralf Rangnick, and Erik ten Hag. He was released by Ten Hag in 2023 after the FA Cup final loss, ending a period where he won the Player of the Year award four times and established himself as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the club’s history.
Shaw’s list of managers does not include Ferguson or Moyes, but features Van Gaal, Mourinho, Solskjær, Carrick, Rangnick, Ten Hag, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and Ruben Amorim. Phil Jones also technically played under nine managers, but did not appear in matches for Carrick or Ten Hag due to injury.
De Gea had his highest number of appearances under Solskjær (120) and Mourinho (113), while Shaw’s peak came with Solskjær (118 matches), followed by Ten Hag (62).
With Shaw signed at United until 2027, he has a chance to match or even exceed De Gea’s record, especially considering the unpredictability of football management today. Although Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the new co-owner, has expressed support for Ruben Amorim in a long-term role, stability at the club is not guaranteed.
On the other hand, De Gea has found consistency in Italy, joining Fiorentina in 2024 after a year away from the sport, working under Raffaele Palladino in Serie A.
For Shaw, the statistics already tell a story of remarkable persistence. The key question now is whether his journey at United will be long enough to add another chapter to the club’s record books.
