Ruben Neves has recently appeared on Manchester United‘s radar as the winter transfer window approaches.

United is looking to strengthen its midfield, with plans for a significant summer signing and a smaller acquisition in January.

Players like Elliot Anderson, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton are potential summer targets, each expected to cost around £100 million.

In contrast, alternatives such as Al-Hilal’s Ruben Neves and Atletico Madrid’s Conor Gallagher are seen as opportunities due to their lower price, with Neves valued at £20 million.

Neves has turned down a new contract from the Saudi club, seeking a return to the Premier League after his successful spell with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

His experience in the Premier League aligns with INEOS’ goal of recruiting proven players for United.

However, there is a financial concern for United.

According to The Guardian, Neves currently earns £350,000 per week at Al-Hilal, a salary that Manchester United traditionally might have matched, but the new management under INEOS is focused on financial sustainability.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe aims to lower the club’s wage bill. Key players like Antony were sold, while Marcus Rashford is on loan with Barcelona, and Jadon Sancho is also expected to leave after his loan at Aston Villa.

All three players were earning over £300,000 per week, which the current setup is trying to avoid.

Even Casemiro, an important player for United, may need to take a pay cut from his £350,000 weekly salary to stay at the club after his contract ends this summer.

Given this situation, it seems unlikely that United would be willing to match Neves’ current salary, meaning he would have to accept a pay cut to join Old Trafford.
