To keep pace with Arsenal at the top of the Premier League, Manchester City is considering a significant move in January. Currently five points behind the London leaders, City faces challenges in the coming weeks as they will be without Omar Marmoush for nearly five weeks due to the Africa Cup of Nations. With Jérémy Doku just returning to form recently and Savinho and Oscar Bobb underperforming this season, Manchester City is looking to boost its attacking options.
According to Times, the Sky Blues are keen on signing Bournemouth sensation Antoine Semenyo. The Citizens are seriously considering triggering the winger’s release clause of €74 million. At just 25 years old, he has already scored six goals and provided three assists in 12 matches this season, ranking as the fifth top scorer in the Premier League. His versatility to play on both wings and sometimes as a striker fits perfectly with Pep Guardiola’s requirement to strengthen the attack.
Liverpool has also been monitoring the player closely, particularly under the gaze of their sporting director Richard Hughes, who acquired him at Bournemouth. However, following a summer of over €400 million in spending, the Reds seem hesitant to make major moves in the winter market. On the other hand, City believes Semenyo could add more offensive variety to their squad, which has been overly reliant on Erling Haaland. His arrival could also relieve some pressure on Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva, who are often used on the wings despite their more central roles.
The timing appears ideal for City. Semenyo’s clause will activate in January, and there are no international barriers to impede his transfer, as Ghana has missed out on qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations. It remains to be seen if the Citizens will take the plunge and secure this rising talent to energize their attack, especially since, despite Erling Haaland’s extraordinary form with 14 goals in 13 matches, Phil Foden is the only other Manchester City player to score more than once in the Premier League this season.
