The transfer market at Old Trafford is hotting up. This time, it is the turn of Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes to be at the centre of speculation. Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal are reportedly pursuing the creative Portuguese midfielder’s signature. However, amid the torrent of rumours surrounding his departure, United coach Ruben Amorim has sent out a different message.
“I don’t think it’s the end,” he said. This short but firm statement was made after a friendly against Hong Kong, in which Bruno only played the first half.
The 2024/25 season has been a nightmare for Manchester United. They finished 15th in the Premier League, lost in the Europa League final to Tottenham, and are under increasing financial pressure. Amidst this turmoil, a significant question emerges: will the Red Devils sell their valuable assets to stabilise their finances?
Bruno Fernandes is certainly at the top of the list. As well as scoring 19 goals and providing 18 assists last season, his status as an influential player makes him highly sought after. Al-Hilal made a fantastic proposal, and reportedly, negotiations have been ‘productive’.
However, after the match against Hong Kong, which MU won 3–1, Ruben Amorim made a statement that shook many people’s predictions. Although he admits uncertainty, Amorim believes that Bruno has not played his last game for the Red Devils.
‘I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think so. He sees the changes we are making. He wants to win. He is young and a great player; he should stay in the best league in the world,” he told reporters.
This statement can be taken as an affirmation: Manchester United have not given up. Despite last season’s frustrations, Amorim believes that the new project under his leadership can rekindle Bruno’s passion.
However, it cannot be denied that Bruno himself opened the door to leaving at the end of the season. In a previous interview, the 30-year-old midfielder admitted that he would not hesitate to leave if he felt he was no longer making an impact on the club.
‘If I feel I am no longer needed, I will leave,’ he said at the time.
Al-Hilal’s offer also came at the ‘right’ time. The Saudi Pro League club is prepared to spend a significant sum to lure the captain. If the transfer goes ahead, it will benefit not only Bruno, but also MU, who will receive a fresh injection of funds to cover the budget shortfall.
However, Amorim has a different view. According to him, selling Bruno is not the only option.
‘We can find other ways to make money,’ he said. ‘I am the coach, but sometimes the decision is up to the player. I have spoken to him, though, and I think he wants to stay.”
While Amorim’s statement shows confidence, it also acknowledges that things can still change. Moreover, Bruno looked frustrated several times last season. If Al-Hilal’s offer is really that tempting, it could be too hard to resist.
But amidst all the speculation, MU continued with their pre-season preparations. After being humiliated by the ASEAN All-Stars a few days earlier, they bounced back by beating the Hong Kong team.
MU were behind in the match after Juninho scored in the 19th minute. However, a complete turnaround in the second half was key to their revival. Chido Obi equalised in the 49^(th) minute and scored his second goal in the 81^(st) minute. Ayden Heaven then secured the victory with a goal in injury time.
However, it wasn’t the win itself that caught the eye, but Amorim’s decision to only play Bruno in the first half. Was this a sign of caution or an indication that the midfielder was preparing to leave?
One thing is for sure: Bruno Fernandes’s future remains uncertain. While Ruben Amorim is optimistic, the temptation of Al-Hilal is not to be underestimated. With a high salary and star status, Bruno could opt for a more low-key life in Saudi Arabia.
However, if he stays, it would send a clear message that the Old Trafford dressing room still has fire in its belly. In the midst of their slump, Manchester United need leaders as well as good players.
Right now, no one can replace Bruno Fernandes’ role as the heart of the Red Devils.
