In October, Manchester United defender Rhys Bennett lost his father and has since shared the challenges he has faced off the pitch.

Bennett, who led United to victory in the FA Youth Cup 2022 with teammates Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho, scored in the final against Nottingham Forest.

After taking time off, he has returned to the club following his father’s death.

He credited his parents for encouraging him to chase his dreams since he joined the academy at eight years old.

His parents were notably supportive, with his father often sharing Bennett’s achievements online.

In an interview with Sky Sports reported by The Sun, Bennett described the loss of his father, saying, “The first two or three days were the worst feelings I’ve ever had.”

He added, “As time goes on, you realize ‘I can never feel that bad again.’”

“Football is my life, and it’s tough mentally. It’s not always easy, and injuries can happen at unfortunate times.”

“It drives you to remember that you can’t let challenges defeat you,” he stated. “I wouldn’t be here today without my dad and my family.”

“At a young age, you rely on them for transport to training and keeping schedules. I cherish the simple times when football was everything.”

Bennett also offered advice for those facing mental health struggles: “Speaking up can be tough, but there’s always help available, regardless of your age.”

He continued, “Just a brief conversation can make a significant difference. My dad didn’t know how much he was loved, evidenced by the messages we’ve received from people who met him just once.”

“It’s essential to talk about feelings, especially among men, to break down stigmas.”

“I’ve been at the club since I was eight, trying to be strong. But sharing how you feel is vital.”

“It doesn’t matter where you are; expressing emotions should always be welcomed.”

He elaborated: “I want to diversify my happiness and not just depend on my fitness for joy.”
