Manchester United exited the Champions League in the Quarter-Finals after Bayern Munich scored two quick goals.
The Red Devils made a strong debut in the UEFA Women’s Champions League this season, showcasing their talents throughout the tournament.
In the 2023/24 campaign, Marc Skinner’s team reached the qualifying rounds but was eliminated by PSG, marking their first appearance in the finals.
Their journey included a convincing 4-0 victory over PSV Eindhoven, highlighted by a hat-trick from Elisabeth Terland, and a successful aggregate win against SK Brann.
In a memorable first match against Brann, the team arrived in Bergen without their boots and had to purchase 15 pairs from local sports shops. Despite losing the first leg 1-0, they bounced back with another hat-trick from Terland, winning 3-1 on aggregate to advance to the group stages.
From October to December 2025, Manchester United faced top European teams, securing a 1-0 win against Atletico Madrid and a 2-1 victory over PSG, avenging a previous defeat.
However, they faced two tough losses against Wolfsburg and Lyon, losing 5-2 and 3-0. They recovered to defeat Juventus 1-0, finishing with 12 points in six games and earning a sixth-place finish, which led to a knockout stage match against Atletico Madrid.
After losing to United earlier, Madrid sought revenge, but United triumphed with a 5-0 aggregate win, eliminating the Spanish side from the tournament.
This victory set up the match against Bayern Munich, where the German team narrowly outperformed United. In the first leg at Old Trafford, Bayern won 3-2 with a brace from Pernille Harder.
Maya Le Tisier scored a penalty, while Hanna Lundkvist added another goal; however, it was substitute Momoko Tanikawa’s goal that secured the win for Munich.
In the second leg in Germany, United needed a win. Melvine Malard scored early, giving United hope. But in the 81st minute, Glodis Viggosdottir equalized, and Linda Dallmann scored in the 84th minute, sealing a 5-3 aggregate win for Bayern and ending United’s debut Champions League run.
Despite this setback, United has experienced European competition and sits with 38 points, tied with Arsenal in third and fourth place in the Women’s Super League.
The top three teams qualify for next year’s Champions League. Arsenal has two games in hand and a nine-goal difference advantage over United. With just three games left for United, the battle to secure a Champions League spot is heating up.
