Manchester United is currently in a period of uncertainty as they await the appointment of a new manager this summer.
Before Ruben Amorim was let go, the club was aiming to reshape the squad into a 3-4-3 formation, moving away from wingers to more dynamic wing-backs and additional strikers.
Despite this, the midfield remained largely unchanged, despite needing significant improvement.
The midfield options were limited to Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, and Manuel Ugarte, with Fernandes and Casemiro forming the primary partnership.
Mainoo was largely overlooked by Amorim, while Ugarte struggled to justify his £50 million transfer from PSG in 2024.
With the attacking line already revamped last summer, attention has now shifted to strengthening the midfield.
At least one new midfielder is needed by the end of the season, given that Casemiro’s contract is nearing its end and Christian Eriksen has yet to be replaced.
United is reportedly focusing on targets like Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, and Carlos Baleba.
Recent reports from The Sun indicate that United is optimistic about securing a deal for Carlos Baleba from Brighton.
The 22-year-old had a standout season with Brighton, leading to a £120 million asking price last summer, which was too steep for United.
However, Baleba’s form has since declined, resulting in a decrease in his price tag.
Additionally, United might have an advantage due to Baleba’s close relationship with Bryan Mbeumo, a fellow Cameroon national team player who he sees as an “older brother” during international duties.
Thus, United is hopeful that they can attract Baleba to Old Trafford and strengthen their midfield.
