Manchester United has dismissed Ruben Amorim as head coach due to a breakdown in his relationship with the board.

Amorim has faced a difficult 14 months in charge since taking over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024. The Red Devils finished 15th in the Premier League during the 2024/25 season, marking their lowest league position since 1974.

This season showed some improvement, with United currently sixth in the table, but tensions have surfaced between the 40-year-old coach and the board.

After a draw with Leeds United on Sunday, Amorim expressed his desire for more authority, stating he wants to be the “manager” rather than just the “head coach.”

“I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the head coach,” he stated.

“I know my name is not Conte, Tuchel, Mourinho but I’m the manager of Manchester United,” he added.

“It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decides to change. I’m not going to quit. I’ll do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.”

According to The Athletic, the decision to let go of the former Sporting Lisbon coach is effective immediately. Ex-Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher is expected to take over on an interim basis.
