Manchester United has many academy players on loan as part of INEOS’ approach to improve player development instead of maintaining large squads with quick fixes.

Under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, the club’s strategy has shifted towards sustainable recruitment and clear pathways for player growth, avoiding the collection of players without specific roles.

This new model is inspired by United’s successful past, where academy graduates, part of the Class of ’92, were key players in championship-winning teams instead of being sidelined.

In recent years, loans have become essential for evaluating young players’ abilities to cope with the pressure of senior football outside of Old Trafford.

A notable case occurred last summer when Harry Amass joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan just before the Championship season began.

This move aimed to ensure he gets regular playing time, which United couldn’t guarantee due to competition for spots and injury management at left-back.

Since joining in September, the defender has played every league match possible, totaling 18 appearances in the Championship and completing 90 minutes in nearly all of them.

His standout performances, despite his team’s struggles, earned him recognition, including a Player of the Month award and a recent man-of-the-match honor.

United considers the loan successful but is still unsure about his long-term role, leaning towards another loan being more beneficial than a quick return to the first team.

A permanent transfer next summer is possible if a strong offer comes in.

Manchester United feels relaxed about Harry Amass’ immediate future, and Sheffield Wednesday is optimistic about extending his loan beyond January after recent discussions.

The England Under-19 international also scored his first senior goal in November.

Despite his progress, United does not plan to recall Amass during the winter transfer window.

According to The Sun, the left-back will likely stay with Wednesday for the rest of the season or, if necessary, be loaned to another club, rather than returning to United immediately.

The club believes this experience is crucial, especially given the tough situation at Sheffield Wednesday, who are currently at the bottom of the Championship.

As part of the loan arrangement, United agreed to cover Amass’ wages and living expenses due to Wednesday’s financial difficulties.
