Michael Carrick would gain strong backing from the Manchester United squad if considered for the permanent managerial role.
Carrick has made a positive impact since taking over as interim manager at Old Trafford, following the departure of Ruben Amorim last month. The 44-year-old remains unbeaten in five Premier League matches, securing four wins and placing the Red Devils in the Champions League spots.
The club is actively searching for a permanent manager, weighing several candidates for the summer.
Possible contenders include Oliver Glasner, who will leave Crystal Palace after this season, Gareth Southgate, and Julian Nagelsmann, who may exit Germany post-2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel, previously linked to the job, has signed a new contract with England.
Though Carrick lacks extensive experience, he has garnered respect within the team. Tyrone Marshall from the Manchester Evening News noted that players show strong support for Carrick.
“Both publicly and privately, they [players] speak positively about Carrick. He has brought back joy to many of the players, with Bruno Fernandes being quite vocal in his support,” stated Marshall.
“United is committed to a thorough search process to appoint the right person for the 2026/27 season, and Carrick has certainly positioned himself as a candidate. However, no decisions are expected until later this season, or possibly even after it concludes.
“If the players are consulted, I believe Carrick would receive considerable backing, especially if the positive results continue. They appreciate his coaching style and the adjustments he has made behind the scenes.”
