Manchester United is finalizing the appointment of a caretaker manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. The new manager will lead the team for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, with the goal of securing European football. Currently, the team is in 7th place.
There are two main candidates: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick.
Both are familiar with the club, having played under Sir Alex Ferguson and achieved Premier League success, and have returned to coaching roles since then.
Solskjaer took on a caretaker role after Jose Mourinho was dismissed in 2018 and later became the permanent manager. In 2021, Carrick succeeded him as caretaker after Solskjaer left, until Ralf Rangnick was appointed.
Currently, discussions are ongoing with United about a possible return, with Solskjaer scheduled to meet with the club tomorrow.
The club is eager to finalize an appointment in the coming days, as a manager is expected to be in place before the Manchester Derby.
The match is set for Saturday, January 17, giving the club just a week to make a decision.
Darren Fletcher will manage the team in the FA Cup match against Brighton this weekend, but this could be his last game in charge, although there’s a slight chance he might continue.
Discussions with Solskjaer and Carrick suggest they are the leading candidates for the role. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is keen on the position, viewing it as a chance for redemption after his previous tenure at the club.
