Manuel Ugarte has had a tough time securing his place in the Manchester United squad, but he still received a call-up for Uruguay during the March international break.
Since joining Old Trafford in summer 2024 for £42.2 million from PSG, the midfielder has not made a strong impression, even under former coach Ruben Amorim.
Despite their past collaboration at Sporting CP, Amorim noted that Ugarte was not the same player he had trained back in Lisbon.
Following Amorim’s dismissal in January 2026 and Michael Carrick’s appointment as caretaker manager, Ugarte’s playing time has decreased even further.
Under Carrick, Ugarte has played just 70 minutes across 6 matches but still received an international call-up for Uruguay’s friendly against England.
The match didn’t start well for him, as the defensive midfielder seemed to receive two yellow cards but was not given a red card for the accumulation.
He got his first yellow in the first half for a foul and then another in the second half for dissent.
Referee Sven Jablonski did not show a red card for the second yellow, and Ugarte was substituted in the 87th minute.
After the match, ITV host Mark Pougatch clarified that the first yellow was actually meant for Jose Maria Gimenez, and the second yellow card was rescinded.
