Marc Guehi is nearing a transfer to Manchester City for £20 million, although he could have joined Chelsea a year ago.

Enzo Maresca stepped down as Chelsea manager in early January after a mutual agreement.

Supporters expressed their discontent during the Fulham match, targeting Behdad Eghbali with chants.

Liam Rosenior has taken over since, and while the atmosphere has improved somewhat, uncertainty remains after the 3-2 loss to Arsenal.

This defeat seems to have accelerated Rosenior’s plans for a hectic month, as he seeks reinforcements in central defense.

Enzo Maresca Turned Down a Move for Marc Guehi

Marc Guehi is another player Chelsea couldn’t retain, both in terms of transfer and as a former member of their squad.

This situation arose not from bad luck but from a choice made by former head coach Enzo Maresca.

As reported by Simon Phillips, Maresca did not believe Guehi could successfully fill the central center-back role during Chelsea’s five-at-the-back formation.

After Dean Huijsen chose to sign with Real Madrid, Chelsea looked for another center-back to fill the starting position.

The only defender seen as meeting the criteria was Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. However, Phillips notes that Enzo Maresca was uncertain if Guehi was the right option at that time.

Marc Guehi’s Early Days at Chelsea

Marc Guehi joined Chelsea at the age of seven and spent 14 years there, becoming one of the club’s top youth talents.

He made his first appearance in a 7-1 EFL Cup victory over Grimsby Town in September 2019. Realizing he needed more regular playing time, he secured an 18-month loan to Swansea City, where he excelled as one of the best defenders in the Championship.

Upon returning to Stamford Bridge, Guehi found himself behind Thiago Silva, Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, and Kurt Zouma, facing limited chances. He ultimately decided to leave.

Chelsea fans may feel the loss, especially as City is reportedly offering him £300k per week, a figure Chelsea would struggle to match.
