Enzo Maresca stated that Newcastle United’s early goal on Saturday was a key reason for Chelsea’s slow start at St. James’ Park.

The Magpies were in control during the first half after Nick Woltemade scored just minutes into the match. The German player added another goal in the 20th minute and had a chance to score again before halftime but missed it.

Chelsea bounced back strongly in the second half as Reece James equalized with a superb free-kick goal shortly after the break.

“They deserved to win in the first half, but we deserved it in the second half,” Maresca said in his post-match remarks. “After their second goal, we created three or four chances to win the game.

“In the first half, we have areas to improve, but the character and unity we showed in the second half were impressive. It’s challenging in this atmosphere, and not many teams can handle that.”

When asked about Chelsea’s poor performance in the first half, Maresca explained: “The main factor was the early goal we conceded. After just three minutes, the game shifted in their favor. We scored twice in the second half and could have added more. We made some adjustments at halftime. Coming back in this stadium is tough.

“From the bench, I could see that our plan was correct. My halftime message was to keep up the momentum.

The Italian coach added: “We won against Everton, reached a semi-final, and drew with Newcastle, which is a significant result. I’m pleased with how the players responded.”
