Anthony Martial arrived in Mexico this week and has been approved to start his first game for Monterrey, La Nación reported. The 29-year-old French striker, who joined from AEK Athens, may play his debut match on Saturday at Estadio BBVA against América in a key fixture of Liga MX’s Apertura Matchday 9. “I feel good and I’m very excited to play in Mexico,” Martial stated upon his arrival.

Though his last competitive match was in late July during UEFA Champions League qualifying, Martial has kept in shape and impressed his teammates during his first training session. Wearing the No. 9 jersey, he joins a Monterrey team that is currently leading the standings with 21 points, having won seven consecutive matches. Under coach Domènec Torrent, they aim to match a club record of eight straight wins set in 1963.

América, currently in third place with 17 points, is coming off a 2-1 defeat to Chivas in the national clásico. Martial’s possible debut against one of Mexico’s top teams adds extra excitement to this matchup between two strong contenders, with the top position and momentum at stake in the Apertura season.
