A remarkable achievement.
Arsenal visited Athletic Bilbao for their first UEFA Champions League match and won 2-0. One player also made history.
Details: As reported by Cezary Kaczynski, Gabriel Martinelli scored the third fastest goal in Champions League history since the tournament’s restart. Just 14 seconds after Athletic Bilbao’s goalkeeper kicked the ball following a free-kick, Martinelli found the net. This puts him third on the all-time list.
Jonas holds the second spot, scoring in 11 seconds in 2011, while the record belongs to Bayern Munich’s Roy Makaay, who netted within 10 seconds of the match’s restart.
Additionally, Athletic Bilbao has joined a unique feat of Spanish clubs in the UEFA Champions League that goes back to 1955.
Reminder: The official Champions League website has released the full fixture list for the 2025/26 season. The eight matchdays are set from September 16, 2025, to January 28, 2026. Our editorial team has compiled the complete tournament schedule for you.
