Manchester United is keeping an eye on former academy players who are now succeeding in other leagues.

Transfers, buy-back clauses, and sell-on percentages are key components of the club’s long-term plans, especially as players become valuable assets at different teams.

European competitions play a significant role in shaping contracts, making it more complicated for United to handle talent that has left.

Clubs in Europe are getting more innovative with economic rights and bonus clauses, which benefits both the players and their former teams.

Mason Greenwood’s current scenario highlights how these agreements can change over time.

On Thursday, Olympique de Marseille president Pablo Longoria shared that the club might enhance its ownership of Greenwood’s economic rights if they qualify for the Champions League next season.

Longoria stated, as noted by Get French Football News: “Currently, OM holds 60% of the player’s economic rights and 100% of his sporting rights, with a chance to raise this to 65%.”

“This increase could happen with qualification for the Champions League.”

If this occurs, Manchester United would keep 35% of Greenwood’s economic rights, down from the previous 40% after Marseille raised their share last season.

Longoria praised Greenwood’s growth under manager Roberto De Zerbi, noting his skills and dedication.

“We are very happy with Mason’s development. We recognize his talent, but the work Roberto De Zerbi is doing with him is remarkable,” he said, highlighting the manager’s influence on Greenwood’s improvement.

Greenwood’s performance on the field supports this recognition.

The English forward is currently the top scorer in Ligue 1, with 14 goals and four assists in 21 appearances across all competitions this season.

His efforts have established him as an important player in Marseille’s offense, showcasing why the club might want to boost their investment in him.

For Manchester United, this situation presents both risks and rewards: Mason Greenwood is proving his talent in a leading European league, but an increase in Marseille’s ownership reduces United’s potential financial gains.

This situation underlines the club’s strategy of utilizing outgoing talents while maintaining a stake in their success, a model that continues to benefit United when former academy players excel internationally.
