Jean-Philippe Mateta was set to transfer to AC Milan, but unexpected news disrupted his Deadline Day move.
Crystal Palace had accepted a deal worth over €30 million for the striker, who wanted to leave Selhurst Park during the January window.
The 28-year-old completed medical tests on Monday, but the transfer has now fallen through.
Reporter Sacha Tavolieri noted that Mateta failed his medical due to a knee injury requiring surgery, which will keep him out for three to four months. There were also problems concerning agents’ fees.
The France international hoped joining the San Siro would enhance his chances of making the Les Bleus squad for the FIFA World Cup in North America this summer, but now he may miss the rest of the season. Nottingham Forest and Juventus had also shown interest in him.
Despite Mateta remaining with the team, Palace is still set to acquire Jorgen Strand Larsen from Wolves. Reports indicate that Wolves have accepted a bid of up to £48 million from Crystal Palace, which includes £43 million guaranteed plus £5 million in add-ons.
Additionally, the Eagles have made a late effort to sign Everton winger Dwight McNeil, who has caught the eye of Forest as well. However, Sky Sports News states that Everton is unlikely to approve a loan move and prefers a permanent sale, requiring a significant offer to consider letting him go.
